A beaver is a large, semiaquatic rodent native to North America and Eurasia. They are best known for building dams, lodges, and canals with branches, mud, and stones to provide protection from predators and to create a suitable habitat for themselves. Beavers play a crucial role in shaping aquatic ecosystems, creating new habitats for other species and improving water quality. They are also an important species for fur trade and their glands produce castoreum, a substance used in perfumes and food flavorings.
