온스라고도 불리는 스노우 레오파드는 중앙 및 남아시아 산맥에 서식하는 대형 야생 고양이입니다. 눈표범은 희귀하고 찾기 어려운 종으로, 독특한 흰색 회색 털과 긴 꼬리로 유명합니다. 눈표범은 일반적으로 해발 2,500~4,500미터의 고지대에서 발견되며, 험준하고 외딴 산악 서식지에 서식합니다.

눈표범은 세계자연보전연맹(IUCN)에 의해 멸종 위기에 처한 동물로 지정되어 있으며, 야생에는 약 4,000~7,000마리만 남아있는 것으로 추정됩니다. 이는 서식지 손실, 인간 활동으로 인한 밀렵, 전통 의학 및 사치품으로 높은 가치를 지닌 모피와 기타 신체 부위를 노린 밀렵 등 다양한 위협에 기인합니다.

눈표범과 그 서식지를 보호하기 위해 서식지 보호, 밀렵 방지 대책, 교육 프로그램 등 다양한 보존 노력이 진행되고 있습니다. 하지만 이 웅장하고 중요한 종의 생존을 보장하기 위해서는 더 많은 노력이 필요합니다.
