데모크리토스 (Democritus)

데모크리토스는 고대 그리스의 소크라테스 이전 철학자로, 만물의 근원이 더 이상 쪼개질 수 없는 '원자(Atom)'라고 주장한 원자론의 창시자 중 한 명입니다. 그는 우주가 무한한 허공과 그 속을 움직이는 원자들로 구성되어 있으며, 모든 자연 현상은 원자의 결합과 분리에 의해 발생한다고 믿었습니다. 인간의 어리석음을 비웃는 태도와 낙천적인 성격 때문에 '웃는 철학자'라는 별명으로 널리 알려져 있습니다. 또한 윤리학 측면에서는 마음의 평정심과 즐거움인 '에우튀미아(Euthymia)'를 인생의 목적으로 강조했습니다.

Democritus was a pre-Socratic Ancient Greek philosopher primarily remembered for his formulation of an atomic theory of the universe. He proposed that all matter is composed of indivisible, eternal particles called 'atoms' moving through an infinite void, with all natural phenomena resulting from their collisions and reconfigurations. He is famously known as the 'Laughing Philosopher' due to his tendency to mock human folly and his belief that cheerfulness is the highest good. Beyond physics, he made significant contributions to ethics, identifying 'euthymia' or tranquility as the ultimate goal of human life.
